Jolokia is a former offshore racing 50ft monohull build in aluminum with a liftable keel and rigged as a cutter.
She was designed in 2003 to participate in the famous transatlantic “Route du Rhum” in the Open 50 category.
Built in Brittany, France, Jolokia’s keel first splashed in 2003, beginning a remarkable career promoting social awareness for people with disabilities and environmental advocacy.
Skipper Eric Bellion and his mixed crew of handicapped sailors utilized her unique platform as a racing boat to establish a record on the “Route des Epices”, from Brittany to Mauritius. 9000 nautical miles on the route to India, via the Cape of Good Hope, and advocate integrating people with disabilities into the workplace. Following this record, Eric Bellion competed in the Vendee Globe and released the documentary “Alone at Sea”.
Skipper Eric Jail participated twice in the “Route du Rhum” (2014/2018), sponsoring nonprofits such as “Longitude 181” to use Jolokia as a communication channel about ocean and biodiversity conservation.
SV Jolokia with her new skippers Eric Letellier and Pierre Bardoux is now embarking on new sailing adventures during which they will support research for the Ocean and more sustainable initiatives. Our dream is to refit this former Racing Vessel into a Sailing Research platform open to all.

With her minimum draft of 5 ft, her ballasts and her 17 ft beam, Jolokia can get close to the reef and serve as a stable investigation platform for marine biologists. Offshore capable, and manageable with a limited crew she can easily adapt to changing requirements, and be moved between Oceans.

Although the ocean produces half of Earth’s oxygen, drives our climate and weather, and provides an enormous portion of the world’s food, it is dying due to overfishing, pollution and the effect of climate change. Only 7% of the ocean is currently protected by governments.

Marine Protective Areas are considered the most effective solution for conservation, with the potential to help marine ecosystems remain intact, recover, and build resilience to impacts from climate change.

Strong collective and individual actions are currently being taken around the world to protect at least 30% of the Ocean by 2030.

@SVJolokia nano expedition

Many communities and citizens are joining the efforts of researchers and environmental organizations engaged in protecting our oceans. Sailing vessels have been used by conservation pioneer organizations to carry on expeditions in the most remote pristine and vulnerable part of the Ocean.

SV Jolokia Nano Expedition collects water samples for research labs

On the 25th of October, SV Jolokia embarked in a Cross Atlantic expedition from Rosas Spain to New York USA.

Jolokia skippers are inspired by the action of the pioneer’s sailors engaged in protecting the ocean.

SVJolokia is contributing to the research work of the Stony Brook SoMAS (School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences) nanoplastic research program and the Forensic Fibre and Microplastic Research Group at Staffordshire University by collecting water samples along its Nano Expedition across the Atlantic.

collecting water samples

During, this transatlantic crossing SVJolokia crew is collecting water samples for Luis Medina a researcher from the Stonybrook SoMas NAno Raman Molecular Imaging Laboratory to determine the concentration of nano plastic particles <1 Micron in our oceans. SV Jolokia is also collecting water samples to analyze the presence of micro plastic particles >2.5 Micron as following a procedure developed by Professor Claire Gwinnet Research lead for the Forensic Fibre and Microplastic Research Group at Staffordshire University which aims to use a multidisciplinary approach to improve the analysis and interpretation of particulates for environmental work.

green transatlantic transportation

For this new expedition, SV Jolokia partners with La Compagnie Marine testing their concept of green transatlantic transportation solution by offshore racing boats to move goods and comply with the needs for zero emission global transportation. SV Jolokia carries on board 727Sailbags made of recycle sails. We share the values of this company producing a range of products, all made based on a circular and responsible economic logic. From Vannes France to Annapolis USA by wind. The second load of merchandise comes from RRRaw, a Cacao Factory located in Paris crafting organic delicious products. A delight for the crew!
